Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, beginning shortly after the Sioux victory over General Custer at Little Big Horn, weaves together the perspectives of three key figures: Charles Eastman, a young Dartmouth-educated Sioux doctor seen as evidence of assimilation's success; Sitting Bull, the proud Lakota chief refusing to submit to U.S. policies aimed at stripping his people of their identity, dignity, and sacred land; and Senator Henry Dawes, an architect of government policy on Indian affairs. While Eastman and schoolteacher Elaine Goodale work to improve conditions for Native Americans on reservations, Senator Dawes advocates for more humane treatment, opposing General Sherman's aggressive stance. The film highlights the rise of hope through the prophet Wovoka and the Ghost Dance movement promising an end to suffering, which is tragically shattered by the assassination of Sitting Bull and the brutal massacre of hundreds of Native Americans at Wounded Knee on December 29, 1890. This powerful narrative, written by HBO Films, offers a poignant look at a dark period in American history.
